The Goal

The entry steps are the first part of a home that visitors walk across. This project replaced the old tile on the steps and landing so the entrance looks cleaner and more consistent.

02

Before and After

The original steps were covered in mixed color tile, with worn and uneven spots on some of the steps.

The steps and landing now have a uniform neutral tile. The surrounding walls and the entry itself look the same in both photos, so the new tile is the main change.

What a Staircase Tile Renovation Involves

In general, a renovation includes removing the old tile, checking and preparing the surface underneath, and setting new tile on the steps, risers and landing. The exact scope depends on the condition of your steps, and we confirm it with you in writing.

Questions About This Project

  • It depends on the condition of the steps. Loose, cracked or uneven tile usually needs to be removed and the surface underneath repaired first. Tiling over the top also adds thickness, which can change step heights, so that has to be planned. We look at the surface during your free consultation.

  • Outdoor steps need tile rated for exterior use with good slip resistance. Textured or matte porcelain is a common choice because it is durable and absorbs very little water, while polished or glossy tile can be slippery when wet. When comparing tiles, ask for the slip resistance (DCOF) rating.

  • The price depends on the number of steps, the size of the landing, the type and size of tile, whether old tile has to be removed, and any repairs needed to the surface underneath. Call us for a free consultation and a written estimate for your home.

  • The number of steps, the size of the landing, whether old tile has to be removed, any repairs underneath, and the curing time for setting materials and grout before the steps can be walked on. We can give you a schedule during your consultation.

  • It depends on the scope and on your city. Replacing only the surface tile is treated differently from changes to the size, structure or railing of the steps. Juda Builders offers design, plans and permit preparation, so ask us about your address.
